Composting as an ecological process |
GRADE LEVEL |
Secondary School |
OVERVIEW |
One year ago a team compound of young people and adults decided to set up the composting within the School.Indeed 300 persons take their meal at noon at school and leave on average 30 kilograms of food a day. By composting this organic waste, in one year we shall save several tons for the garbage dump. Indeed if this waste was stored in the dump, not only they would pollute, but still they would oblige to use the water-treatment plant to treat got back "juices". There is nevertheless a simple and natural method, and which furthermore protects the environment. |
METHOD |
In a wooden tub, we mix the waste of the canteen in the "structuring", that is the leaves and the crushed branches, or the wooden shavings. Inside this tub, bacteria, mushrooms and small animals feed on this waste and transform them into a brown material, rich in mineral elements. THE COMPOST. This compost will then be used to feed the plantations of the School, and also the village. This experiment allows schowing the example and explaining the method. And the idea is to make all the school community participate in the global decrease of the waste. |
